Underwater

"Toniland"   I have a dear friend named Toni. She had a bday party recently where I got to see lots of things.. I saw a big bear guy with a quilt, a saw a kitty with a diaper, and I even tried Bacon vodka.  Yes.. bacon.  I can't say that I loved it.  I did love the lychee liquor I tried that evening as well.   But.. anyway.. Toni wanted a manatee... and I made one.one for her :)

Long live Mcqueen

So It looks like I was totally right!!! I knew that Sara Burton from Alexander Mcqueen was going to be the awesome designer to come up w/this beauty of a dress fit for a queen-to-be. This is dress of the Century. I woke up extra early this morning and watched the whole thing under a haze of dawn and darkness. It was so special to me. Lucky Kate stepped out of the vintage Rolls Royce Phantom VI and into the pages of royal and fashion history.

Clean, Pure, Fashionable, and totally adequate, the dress was fit for a queen-to-be and  meshed the feel of a modern princess with that of a vintage classic, proper princess. The amazing number was a strapless, Victorian style corset, narrowed at the waist and padded at the hips, like a lot of Lee's designs, a high-neck, sculpted bodice in hand-made lace. It had long, sheer  lace delicate sleeves and the train was pleated ivory and white satin gazar skirt. The lace applique for the bodice and skirt was hand-made by the Royal School of Needlework, based at Hampton Court Palace. It was hand-engineered using the Carrickmacross technique, which originated in Ireland in the 1820s, pure delicate beauty!

The lace was intricate it had floral motifs representing  roses, thistles, daffodils and shamrocks. It was also used for the brides shoes and to trim the veil. The main body of the skirt in ivory and white satin finished in a short train measuring 9.84 feet. With Kate's  veil of ivory silk tulle was held in place by a Cartier 'halo' tiara, which was loaned by the Queen. The tiara was made in 1936 and was bought by the then Duke of York for his Duchess, three weeks before he took over from his brother as King. It was then presented to Princess Elizabeth, by the queen mom when she turned 18.  The earrings, diamond oak leaves with a pavĂ© diamond acorn in the center were inspired by the Middleton family's new coat of arms and made by Robinson Pelham to pair up beautifully with the simple and beautiful tiara.

Ms. Burton is 35 yrs old and was born in Manchester, she  took over as creative director of the Alexander McQueen brand in May last year, following the tragic death by suicide of the amazing late British couturier. She had been his atelier right-hand for 12 years and she understands his aesthetic.

In just two seasons, Sara Burton has shown the ability to deliver McQueen's radical sense with a pure sense of delicate romance and sensuality.  Always with an unequivocal craftsmanship that makes McQueen's label project into the future of Fashion history for centuries to come.

Hussein for Kate

It seems like Hussein Chalayan is becoming one of my top fashion designers now. After Lee's death and John's sad ending the world of fashion according to me seemed a little empty. I however forgot that since I was little kid Mr. Chalayan was always present wowing me often. How could I have forgotten about him?? I am very excited as I found out about a new book which focuses on the designs of the coolest man and the most experimental, technologically-advanced and original fashion labels in the world.
He's based in London (of course)he made Lady Gaga's famous "egg vessell", had balloons lift clothes magically while being worn, created magical textures made out of light and video, gave clothing a sense of fright, mailed clothing in small envelopes, of course his futuristic aesthetic puts him in a category of his own. The man has worked with lasers, digital technology, remote control, holograms, LED, genetics and of course always giving us Glamour to the t. I think he should have designed Kate Middleton's dress! That would be rad!

The book, "The World of Hussein Chalayan" is to be published by Rizzoli in July, it will have about 250 color awesome photos, it will give a full spectrum of this fashions from way back to present, including art projects, hand drawings, video projects and even writings. It also give us some insight on his roots from his childhood in Turkey to his schooling in London. He actually went to school with Alexander McQueen himself.

I love the fact that he can make clothes morph in front of your very eyes. When Ryan and I saw Lady Gaga last Summer, she wore a dress made by Mr.Chalayan that moved and it seemed like it could breath as if it were alive. I love that!

Sean Kelly Gallery  presents 50 Americans, an exhibition  featuring  works by Mr.  Robert Mapplethorpe. Selected by Fifty people, one from each state.  Each picked artwork from over 2,000 images in Mapplethorpe’s wide catalog.  A lot of the chosen few were not familiar with his work.  Each image included in the exhibition will be accompanied by a text that explains why the participant who selected it found it to be meaningful.

Robert Mapplethorpe is undoubtedly one of the most talented, prolific, and controversial contemporary American artists. Before his untimely death in 1989, he created a remarkable body of work that is unrivaled in breadth and scope. This exhibition will offer a unique opportunity to see two portraits emerge. While the exhibition primarily affords a fresh look at Mapplethorpe and his practice, it also offers a portrait of the tastes and concerns of the exhibition’s curators: everyday Americans.

He took his first photographs using a Polaroid camera, and later became known for his portraits of artists, architects, socialites, stars of pornographic films, members of the S&M community, and an array of other unique people, many of whom were personal friends. During the early 1980s, his photographs shifted to emphasize classical formal beauty, concentrating on statuesque male and female nudes, flowers, still lifes, and formal portraits.

Robert Mapplethorpe: 50 Americans will be on view at the Sean Kelly Gallery NY from May 6 – June

tribal

I am Mexican, but my family comes from Mexico D.F., these guys are from Northern Mexico and I've never seen anything like it! These guys are wild and I am so happy for them. I think its cool that they have some sort of fashion sense and honestly I can see this style making some sort of entrance into high European & American avant-garde fashion. I think I may want to rock a pair!

easter moss

Ms Moss is the new face of Chilean fashion brand Basement, Kate was filmed with a giant Rabbit gentleman caller. Working her sexy dance moves, they seem to have a romantic night and even exchanged gifts. The big question is the morning after. When Kate awakes, surrounded by a lots and lots of white furry rabbits, it seems to give the term "the breed like rabbits" a whole new meaning.

"The Ligth"

This one is one of my attempts to do classy. I did this one for my mom.. Carmen. that's why this one is so settle and "normal". My work is usually more savage. This one is very sweet and since my mom is very sweet I made it for her according to her beliefs. She is very spiritual and she made me spiritual, she taught me so much, about life, people, nature, god, and most importantly how to love unconditionally.
I love her with all my heart.

Alexander McQueen Tribute in London Sunday Times, starring Daphne Guinness from Indrani on Vimeo.

I am so sad I can't be in NY seeing Miss Guinness get ready for the Gala at the Met but this can give us an idea of how diva she is.

Savage Queen

Oh joy! Beautiful images are popping out from the upcoming Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. The exhibit will begin on May 2 with the annual Met Ball and open to the public two days later through July 31. "Savage Beauty", is a retrospective of more than two decades of Lees's work and will include pieces from his MA graduate collection from Central St Martins College of Art, couture pieces from his years as Givenchy's creative director, as well as pieces from his own name collection up to his final one, which debuted a few weeks after his sad ending.

I also heard about a juice interview by Tim Blanks with Miss Sarah Burton, and she says shoes were of extreme importance to McQueen,"they anchored the look." other accessories and clothing will all be featured in the exhibition. Exhibition was curated by Andrew Bolton. Pieces came from private collections, archives, and from Miss Isabella Blow's personal collection, which was bought by Daphne Guinness the divaest of them all! And BTW...anyone who would like to see what it takes to get ready for the Met Ball, stop by Barneys New York on Madison Avenue as Daphne Guinness will be getting ready for the A-list event in the department store's windows!!!!!

W.E.

cover girl

Haus of Gaga revealed the cover for Miss G's new Album Born this way. She's a motorcycle! This album brings a lot of promises and it's expected to live up to them. Ms.Gaga says this album is like an immaculate conception. Some of the new titles are "Hair", "Bad Kids" and "Government Hooker." The 1st single of course "Born this way" and the 2nd just out is "Judas." "Americano" which she describes as like "a big mariachi techno-house record, where she sings about immigration law and gay marriage. Miss G says "it sounds like a pop record but I imagine Edith Piaf in a spotlight when I sing it" she also says its better than anything she's done before. "It is much more vocally up to par with what I've always been capable of. It's more electronic, but I have married a very theatrical vocal to it. It's like a giant musical-opus theater piece." Can't wait to hear it. Coming up this May!

 "Yoga"
A long time ago.. I got all these really amazing chalks and I went to town. I completed this piece while Shmee and Ry went to TJ, they got back 6 hours later and I had this finished.    I really didn't stop one single bit.   This was an homage to of course M, from her W photos w/ Steven Klein. "M rides again".
Now this painting hangs proud at Ms. Amy Ralph's hip Los Angeles apartment.

ashes 2 ashes

"Ashes to Ashes"
I used to live in a crazy mansion on Scholls Canyon in Glendale CA.  This piece was done in there while I lived with a hot straight boy who as a total mess.  This piece  actually glows in the dark and its very eerie.  That entire house was eerie. Do you believe in ghosts? I do.  Anyway.. this picture meant a lot to me because it made me break into a new genre of my art comfort zone. It was the 1st painting of a face I ever did. This image came from the video directed by David Bowie and David Mallet from the 1980 Ashes to Ashes song for the album Scary Monsters (and super Creeps). Mr. Bowie said for this album he was:"wrapping up the seventies really for myself, and that seemed a good enough epitaph for it".  I find all of Mr. Bowie's material as the base of most of my inspiration.

 "Madonna's Head"
This piece was created on a 72'' x 43" window screen.  There was a lot of hand sewing involved.  I used wool and silk string.  There are more elements about 100 in total including contact lenses, drawings, feathers, buttons, jewels, plastics of all sorts, painted and printed transperancies, faux hair, there's even a knife.  I lived in this world for one night of nightmares, I woke up and created it.  The best part about this piece is that it was see-thru and the light made it change colors brilliantly.

"Heaven dances"
This was a gift I made for Ryan when he lived in the East coast.  This is an oil piece.  This was done while I was in a dark place in my life. I was sad Ryan was away and I lived w/this man who was very scary. I lived in Echo Park and I remember one of the only things that would give me hope was Madonna's Die Another Day video.  Hence the symbols at the bottom of the painting. They basically mean Lamed.Alef.Vav  self control, release from egotism, hypocrisy, enslavement to caprices, and the need to transcend others. This painting also reminds me of my dear and loved friend "Shmee" who died later that year.  This painting symbolizes heaven and hell, your dreams and the forms of many addictions.

This was an awesome photo session.  I wanted to feel the texture of the bricks, cement sidewalks, and hanging under the bridge.  I styled this shoot and my models were rock stars.  This was my 1st photo shoot in Portland, Oregon.
